Cortona help button is comming soon for 23$
Device can talk to cortana on a PC in your home or office, or it can mount to a car ot bike for on-the-go-use w/ mobile devices
The launch of Windows 10 this week will expose many more people to Microsoft's Cortana digital assistant, which was already available in Windows Phone 8.1. Now a mobile device accessory company called Satechi has revealed plans to launch the Cortana BT Button, which it says will help Windows 10 PC and phone users to access Cortana better in locations like a car, an office meeting and more.
A small San Diego, Calif. peripherals startup named Satechi is making a pretty interesting add-on for one of the most exciting features of Microsoft corp.'s (MSFT) Windows 10--Cortana. Satechi's new peripheral is aptly dubbed the "BT Cortana Button".
Priced at $23 USD the small saucer-shaped device allows you to press interact with cortana on a connected windows 10 device.
The BT Stands for Bluetooth, the connectivity protocol used. Basically it's just a specialist Bluetooth mic-speaker combo not the different from your hands-free headset.
But what makes it interesting is that's it's narrowly targeted specifically at providing an instant link to the voice assistant software on nearby PC. windows phone owners obviously won't need this in the comfort of their home--they already have cortana at the touch of a device in the palm of their hand. But for Apple,Inc. (AAPL) I Phone or Google Inc. (GOOG) Andriod smartphone users, the peripheral is sort of an intriguing prospect if you take the slice of users on the venn diagram who appreciate windows 10.
But even for Windows Phone users there;s a bit of utility as the device is also adverstised as a hands-free mount for connecting to a windows 10 tablet or windows phone device on the go, e.g. on a bike or in a car.
Cortana in windows 10 responds to simple information queries ( including pulling results from the net). "She" also can handle scheduling and alerts. Other uses include notifications or tapping Cortana's music recognition features, which are similar to the Shazam app.
while the device might be more of a novelty than anything else, its price is low enough to make it an intriguing novelty at that. The downside is that the device will drain the battery life of your phone/tablet/etc. if you're mobile. But since it's using the Bluetooth 4.0 LE protocol the impact should be relatively minimal. after all this isn't all that different from a hands-free phone earpiece. The speaker is always listening, but it won't wake up the BT 4.0 LE attached windows 10 device unless it picks up the key hook it's listening for--"Hey cortana."
That's the same cute that's used in windows 10 PCs whose microphones are generally on and listening for it . so the learning curve there should be minimal. Range is one limitation. The built-in battery that powers the mic is rated at two years of battery life. The device has a maximum range of 40 feet,so generally speaking the PC or mobile device with windows 10 will need to be in the room you're in currently or in an adjacent room.
The device is shipping in late August and will be available from both AMAZON.COM, Inc. and direct from satechi's own site.if you like windows 10 and you use Cortana, there;s probably worse way to spend $23 USD.
