Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4 Spyder to get Frankfurt reveal

Image
Lamborghini has confirmed a new Spyder variant of its Huracán. Set to make its debut at the Frankfurt motor show, the new open-top Huracán will replace the ageing Gallardo Spyder in the company's line-up. This information was first confirmed to our sister publication Autocar UK at the Pebble Beach Concours event last year. The new Huracán Spyder  is expected to retain the same 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 that makes 602bhp and 57.09kgm of torque as the coupé. The performance figures will be revealed after the car's official launch, but it could be close to the Huracán coupé’s – a 0-100kph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 326.4kph. To save weight, the Huracán Spyder will use a folding soft-top as opposed to the hard-top on its rival, the Ferrari 488 GTS.

New Volvo XC40 to take on Audi Q3

Image
As reported by us last year, Volvo is readying a new small SUV which is likely to be called the XC40.  This new SUV will be the third offering in Volvo’s global SUV line-up. The new Volvo XC40 will take on the fight against the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA small SUVs. This SUV will be based on Volvo’s new modular CMA platform which is co-developed by Volvo and Geeley. It will also share its underpinnings with a similar offering from Geeley (codenamed NL-4). To be manufactured in China initially, the new SUV will share factory space with its Geeley equivalent. According to this  website , the new Volvo XC40 will be one of the first models to come with the firm’s new 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol Drive-E engine. This engine is being built to be used in Volvos employing CMA, and also the larger S60 and V60 models which are based on the SPA. It can function with both manual and automatic transmissions, and also be mated to four-wheel-drive and hybrid systems. The three-p

Lamborghini Huracán Spyder makes its debut at Frankfurt

Image
Lamborghini has revealed the Huracán Spyder, the drop-top version of the Huracán and the successor to the Gallardo Spyder, at the Frankfurt motor show. Set to rival the Ferrari 488 GTS internationally, the Huracán Spyder comes equipped with a folding soft-top fabric roof and a few other minor tweaks to set it apart from the standard coupé. The fabric roof on the Huracán Spyder, according to the manufacturer, can be folded in under 17 seconds, at speeds up to 50kph. The Spyder also gets additional vents above the rear wheels and buttresses behind the headrests to differentiate it from the coupé. The interior is almost identical to the coupé, except for the addition of an electrically operated screen behind the seats, to reduce wind buffeting inside the cabin when the roof's down. The car is powered by the same 607bhp 5.2-litre V10 as its sibling, though here it gets the addition of stop-start technology and cylinder-on-demand technology (deactivate cylinders when not req

Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE Dynamic Lux revealed at Frankfurt

Image
Land Rover has launched a top-of-the-line HSE Dynamic Lux variant to its Discovery Sport range. The new variant gets the addition of 20-inch gloss black alloys, black cladding on the body and doors, whereas the cabin gets new colours and trim details. The highlight of the HSE Dynamic Lux variant is the inclusion of a new Intelligent Dynamics options package, which brings together Land Rover’s adaptive damper systems  and the All Terrain Progress Control, that helps maintain steady speed in off-road conditions. The Intelligent Dynamics package will soon be available as an optional extra across the Discovery Sport model range. The car's ‘Active Driveline’ system allows power to be sent to either two or four wheels, depending on road conditions. Currently available only in international markets, the Discovery Sport HSE Dynamic Lux is powered by the 178bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Electric Porsche Mission E showcased at Frankfurt

Image
Porsche has revealed its rival to the Tesla Model S in the form of the electric-powered Mission E. Unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show, the Mission E claims zero-emission compatibility along with a range of more than 533km on a full battery. With a kerb weight of 2,000kg, the concept is also said to achieve a 0-100kph time of 3.5 seconds, just 0.1 second behind the latest 911 Turbo’s sprint time. This all-electric four-wheel-drive car is powered by two in-house developed electric motors – one acting on the front axle and one powering the rear wheels – delivering a combined output of over 600bhp. The new concept gains at least 80bhp over the fastest production 911 Turbo powered by the twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre six- cylinder engine. Computer simulations also suggest a sub-8 minute lap time around the Nürburgring by the Mission E, making its performance comparable to the Cayman S. As per Porsche's claim, the production model of the four-door Mission E will be ready before

Mercedes-Benz unveils Concept IAA

Image
Not long after Mercedes released teaser images of the Concept IAA, the car has been officially launched at the Frankfurt motor show. IAA stands for Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile, and the concept features an extendable body. At 80kph the elements in the tail section extend, increasing the total length of the car by 390mm. The IAA concept is 100mm longer than the CLS and with the body fully stretched in aerodynamic mode, is longer than the S-class. The wheelbase too is 100mm longer than the current-gen E and CLS-class which hints at the possibility of larger interior space in future models. The interior of the IAA previews the upcoming E-class and is based on the current S-class. Mercedes' Concept IAA features a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid system used in the C350e Plug-in Hybrid which pairs a 208bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an 80bhp electric motor and gives out 275bhp and 61.10kgm of torque. Mercedes is yet to provide any performance

New Infiniti Q30 showcased at Frankfurt motor show

Image
Infiniti has showcased the new Q30 in its final production form.  It will come in three trim levels: SE, Sport and Premium with a choice of five engines, in petrol and diesel. The Sport level will get a bespoke front bumper and a gloss black front grille, along with body-coloured sills and dark chrome exhausts and will rest on 19-inch alloys and a stiffer suspension. The Premium trim will get a number of styling features over the SE trim such as LED front fog lights, body-coloured and heated door mirrors and chrome-coloured exhausts and 18-inch alloys. The engines include a 1.6-litre petrol making either 120bhp or 154bhp, a 107bhp 1.5-litre diesel and a 2.2-litre diesel capable of 168bhp. A 208bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol is also offered on the Sport and Premium variants. Two choices are offered on the gearbox – a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch auto. Performance details, however, have not been disclosed. Equipment offered on each trim level and costs will be

Audi e-tron Quattro concept unveiled

Image
Audi has taken the wraps off of the e-tron Quattro concept. The precursor to the company’s upcoming all-electric Q6 SUV, thee-tron Quattro concept combines the rugged elements of a SUV with the sporty styling of a Coupe. Stylistically the same as seen in the official design sketches, the e-tron Quattro concept uses Audi’s latest development in battery technology, aerodynamics, lightweight construction and electric drive systems to help provide it with performance to challenge the current crop of fast petrol, diesel and electric Audis. At the heart of Audi’s newest concept sits a trio of electric motors – one powering the front wheels while two power the rear. Base output for the system is set at 429bhp but can be temporarily boosted to up to 496bhp. Torque output is set at 81.57kgm. Power is distributed to all four-wheels a drive-management system while an electronic torque vectoring system is used to apportion power between the rear wheels to help maintain optimum grip. In additi

Mercedes-Benz to release all-new EV

Image
Mercedes officials have confirmed the launch of its all-new electric vehicle within a year. Speaking to our sister publication Autocar UK at the Frankfurt motor show, the company's engineering head Dr Thomas Weber said that the new car would offer a range between 400 and 500km, using lithium-ion batteries with double the energy density of current components. The news follows the onslaught of EVs at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show, specially from Mercedes’ rivals, Porsche and Audi. Previous EVs from the car manufacturer include the SLS AMG Electric Drive and B-Class Electric Drive. The company could make its entry into the luxury saloon or SUV EV market, by building a large car that has enough room to accommodate a battery pack, and at a price that’s high enough to justify electric vehicle costs without being prohibitive.

Next-gen Honda Civic revealed

Image
Honda has revealed the tenth generation of the Civic in Los Angeles in sedan and five-door hatchback avatars. The 2016 Civic gets new engines, a new chassis and sleeker styling. The US market also finally gets the Civic Type R, which will rival the 306bhp 2.0-litre Ford Focus RS. The 1.5-litre direct-injected and turbocharged four-cylinder motor, which is the first-ever turbocharged Honda engine in the US is the main talking point. As per Honda, the new unit will roughly produce around 203bhp, that is 30bhp more than the current 1.8-litre engine. A 158bhp 2.0-litre i-VTEC four-cylinder engine is also available on the base trims of the Civic, with the option of a six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT. In terms of dimensions, the new Civic sedan sits 50mm wider, 25mm lower and 30mm longer at the wheelbase than the existing model, and Honda has managed to shave off 31kg from its weight as well. The increase in dimensions have resulted in a roomier interior and gets an additional 73

Mini plan to introduce larger models in its portfolio

Image
It's already known that Mini is working on a replacement for the current Countryman, which is planned to take the form of an ‘authentic’ SUV. Although the original Countryman, launched in 2010, it quickly accounted for more than a third of Mini sales. The second-generation Countryman is expected to be more rugged than the current model, taking some cues from the Mini X-Raid, which has won the Dakar Rally four times since 2012. It will be based on the same UKL architecture as the Clubman making it significantly spacious. It’s expected to be just over 150mm longer and at least 10mm wider than the current Countryman. There is also, a new Clubman in the works which is 158mm longer, 10mm wider and 119mm lower than the existing Countryman. A Mini Traveller MPV (essentially a sister car to the BMW 2 Series) has also been developed as a possible new model line. Facts have drawn ire from traditional fans of the marque, who argue that the growth in size is not in keeping with its brand

Maserati opens first India dealership in Delhi

Image
A little more than two months after announcing its re-entry in India, Italian luxury carmaker Maserati has inaugurated its first dealership in New Delhi in partnership with AMP Supercars. The showroom, located near Mathura Road, will include sales, after-sales service and will also function as a parts facility. The showroom will showcase models from the Maserati stable such as the Ghibli sedan, the Quattroporte diesel, the Quattroporte GTS, the GranTurismo sports coupe and the GranCabrio. The showroom also includes an exclusive customer lounge and a configurator area where interested buyers can customise their cars. Maserati had to wind up operations around three years ago after its previous stint in the country with the Indian distributor Shreyans Group ran into trouble. The Italian marque, owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, now plans to open two more dealerships in Mumbai and Bangalore in the near term. Maserati’s return to India follows the return of its FCA sibling Ferra

New Ford Figo launched at Rs 4.29 lakh

Image
Ford has launched the new Figo starting at Rs 4.29 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the petrol variant while the diesel Figo is priced from Rs 5.29 lakh. As is clear from the name, it is the new avatar of the Figo, and the hatchback sibling of the recently launched Figo Aspire sedan. The new Figo gets the same set of engines as the Aspire. This means buyers can choose from the 98.6bhp 1.5 diesel engine, the 86.8bhp 1.2 petrol unit, or the range-topping 110.5bhp 1.5-litre petrol. While the diesel and the smaller petrol motor come mated to a standard five-speed manual gearbox, the bigger, more powerful petrol engine comes with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard. Great move by Ford to introduce the DCT gearbox at this price point; the only other hatchback to offer the tech is the VW Polo GT TSI, which is on the other side of the Rs 10 lakh mark. The Figo is available in five trim levels — Base, Ambiente, Trend, Titanium and Titanium+. The 1.2 petrol and the 1.5 dies

Volkswagen boss Martin Winterkorn resigns

Image
Martin Winterkorn has announced his resignation as the chief executive of the Volkswagen Group with immediate effect, the company has announced, in the wake of the scandal about a software cheat in American NOx emissions tests. The 68-year-old executive, who fought off Ferdinand Piech in a power struggle earlier this year, had been expected to have a fresh contract extension ratified by VW’s supervisory board at the end of this week. However, a select group of board members - known as the presidium - met in Wolfsburg this morning. The panel comprised interim VW Group chairman Berthold Huber, Lower Saxony prime minister Stephan Weil, Wolfgang Porsche (representative of the VW Group’s largest single shareholder) and two works council officials, Bernd Osterloh and Stephan Wolf. An official statement from Winterkorn said, " I am shocked by the events of the past few days. Above all, I am stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group. As CEO I accept

Renault Kwid launched at Rs 2.57 lakh

Image
Renault has launched the Kwid starting at Rs 2.57 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The car's biggest draw is its attractive, crossover-like looks in a segment where cars hold a relatively basic design. The Renault Kwid is aimed squarely at models like the Maruti Alto, Hyundai Eon and the Datsun Go. The Kwid gets a 799cc three-cylinder petrol unit that makes 53.2bhp and 7.34kgm of torque. Now although the power output isn't very high, what helps the Kwid is that it weighs a class-leading 660kg only, and that is thanks to the lightweight construction and all-aluminium engine. This helps it achieve a good power-to-weight ratio, and also deliver impressive fuel efficiency; Renault claims 25.17kpl. It is 3,679mm long, 1,579mm wide, 1,478mm high, and has a wheelbase measuring 2,422mm. The high ground clearance of 180mm gives the Kwid its mini-SUV stance. Boot space is remarkable at 300 litres, and exceeds that of most of its rivals. Renault is betting big on the Kwid. It looks more l

Audi to launch Q2 before Q1

Image
Audi has confirmed that it will launch the Q2 compact crossover, the smallest model in the Q range, at the 2016 Geneva Show. Previously known as the Q1, Audi could not use the Q2 nomenclature (its preferred choice) as it was owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). However, the German luxury car brand has finally managed to acquire the rights to the Q2 (and Q4) badges from FCA.   Speaking to Autocar India, Audi's head of R&D, Ulrich Hackenberg confirmed that 'the production version will be called the Q2 and the Q1 will come later'. This would fit in with Audi's model hierarchy in which the Q1 would be an even smaller crossover, spun off the next-gen A1's platform. While the Q2 would be a notch below the Q3 and use the modular MQB that underpins the Audi A3 and VW Golf, the Audi Q1 'could be less than 4 metres long', according to Hackenberg.   Whilst the Q2 is likely to be powered with three- and four-cylinder versions of VW's latest pe

Mercedes re-introduces Maybach brand in India

Image
Mercedes has re-introduced its Maybach premium luxury brand in India with two models, the  Mercedes-Maybach S500 and the Mercedes-Maybach S600 sedans. The Maybach brand which shut down in 2011 after almost a decade of losses makes a comeback as a sub-brand this time around (in the same vein as the AMG) and cements itself as double-barrel surname into the Mercedes family. The Mercedes-Maybach S600 is not only the German carmaker’s most premium offering in India but is also the first to be powered by its largest engine yet - the V12. While the Mercedes-Maybach S600 will be sold as a completely built unit in India, the V8-powered Mercedes-Maybach S500 will be locally assembled.  This is the first time a Maybach model is assembled outside Germany. The new Mercedes-Maybach was first unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show in November last year.  Based on the new S-class, the Maybach is a full 207mm longer when compared to the long wheelbase S-class and most of it, 200mm to be pre

Five million VW cars affected due to emissions scandal

Image
Volkswagen has revealed that internal investigations are ongoing as to which of its cars are affected by the emissions software that allowed its cars to cheat emissions tests in the USA, and their whereabouts  in the world. However, it has confirmed that 5m of the 11m cars affected are VWs. In a statement, the firm said: "The internal evaluation revealed that approximately five million Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand vehicles are affected worldwide. Certain models and model years of these vehicles (such as the sixth generation Volkswagen Golf, the seventh generation Volkswagen Passat and the first generation Volkswagen Tiguan) are equipped exclusively with type EA189 diesel engines. "As previously announced, all new Volkswagen Passenger Car brand vehicles that fulfill the EU6 norm valid throughout Europe are not affected. This therefore also includes the current Golf, Passat and Touran models." Although VW has not stated which of its other brands has cars c
